Pasture, Rangeland, and forages cover approximately 55 percent of all U.S. land. Forage grows differently in different areas, so it's important for farmers and ranchers to know which types and techniques work best for their region. The following insurance program is available for Pasture, Rangeland, and Forage (PRF).
Rainfall Index (RI) is based on weather data collected and maintained by NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center. The index reflects how much precipitation is received relative to the long-term average for a specified area and timeframe.
Vegetation Index (VI) – is based on the U.S. Geological Survey’s Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) data derived from satellites observing long-term changes in greenness of vegetation of the earth since 1989.
Forage Production Index – is based on NASS county level hay yield data (all hay or alfalfa hay). The index reflects how much hay is produced relative to the long-term trend for the county. Coverage is available for forage production in select counties.
The United States currently comprises about 954 million acres of farmland. The Annual Forage pilot program provides coverage to acreage that is planted each year and used as feed and fodder by livestock. This pilot program utilizes the Rainfall Index to correlate to this acreage. Also see livestock policies and resources.

The Stacked Income Protection Plan (STAX) is a crop insurance product for upland cotton that provides coverage for a portion of the expected revenue for your area. Most often your area will be your county; however, your area may include other counties or even practices as necessary to obtain a credible amount of data to establish an expected yield and premium rate.
STAX may be purchased on its own, or in conjunction with another policy referred to as a “companion policy.” Companion policies may include Yield Protection, Revenue Protection, Revenue Protection with the Harvest Price Exclusion, and any of the Area Risk Protection Insurance policies. Beginning with the 2017 crop year, you may also purchase STAX if your farm is covered under the Whole-Farm Revenue Protection policy. The Federal government will pay for 80 percent of the premium cost for STAX.
STAX is available in all counties where Federal crop insurance coverage for upland cotton is offered.
